As many of you know, last week was Computer Science Education Week in the US. As part of a massive push to expose students to the many valuable skills that computer science develops, an organization called Code.org created something called the Hour of Code. The Hour of Code was very simple in nature-get your students to give computer coding a try for one hour during the week of Dec 10-14. Well, 6RJ did just that and some. We created our whole assembly around the Hour of Code and all the great skills coding develops. It was a fantastic learning experience and one I think the students of 6RJ will remember for a long time.
The students of 6RJ not only learned how to code, but were also involved in running mini workshops to the other Jr. School classes that introduced them to the Hour of Code. This was a great opportunity for them to work on their public speaking, leadership and team-work skills. All in all, every student in 6RJ was able to run at least one workshop and I believe there were at least six Jr. School classes that participated in the Hour of Code. With all of the involvement, the students are very keen to code and some have even created basic gaming apps.
